“iOS 7 is the biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the iPhone.”

-Tim Cook

As Apple unveils its new operating system, iOS 7, to the public, app developers have a lot to be excited about. iOS 7 includes an astounding 1,500 new APIs and a completely renovated user interface. Other new features include enhanced multitasking, single sign-on capabilities, a dynamic text-rendering engine, iBeacons, and AirDrop.

So how will iOS 7 impact your existing iOS apps? Will your apps even run smoothly on iOS 7? Will your customers notice if you don’t update them? If so, will they still be loyal customers knowing your app is running on an old platform? Will your competitors take advantage of new features and leave you behind? Will you have issues maintaining apps designed for older versions of iOS?

What are YOU going to do?

Whether you market your apps in the Apple App Store or use them solely within your enterprise, the size and scope of this new operating system is going to bring about some big changes — and some exciting new opportunities — effective immediately.

When it comes to the question of upgrading or redesigning your applications to accommodate the new operating system, it’s really not a question of “if” it’s more a question of “how” and “when.” Our advice? The sooner, the better.

Some key reasons for upgrading your apps today include:

  • Maintain consumer confidence. Consumers and employees are going to know their device made a dramatic change — and they’re going to expect you to change with it. Not updating your applications sends a message that you’re not interested and simply don’t care about the changes they’ve experienced.
  • Retain your market position. Quite simply, apps that move ahead and take advantage of iOS 7 features will get more exposure in the Apple App Store — as well as in the press. Those who don’t, won’t.
  • Protect consumer loyalty. New interface interactions and design options will most likely create a situation where if you don’t meet user expectations of the platform — and/or visually complement it — your customers or employees will stop using your app.
  • Optimize and simplify future app updates and maintenance. Within a few short months, iOS 7 will be installed on the majority of iOS devices. If you choose not to update, you will be left with a code base that will become increasingly more dated and harder to maintain.

With the Apple App Store already accepting iOS 7 app submissions for review, application developers — us included — are busy at work, updating and redesigning existing apps to accommodate the new operating system. We’re also developing new offerings that incorporate iOS 7’s new capabilities that make what was once impossible, possible.
